How do I apply during the Annual Enrollment Period for a Marketplace health plan?

The Annual Enrollment Period runs from November 15th, 2014 to February 15th, 2015.

Below are step-by-step instructions that will help you through the process of:

  • Determining if you are eligible for a subsidy (tax credit) from the government to help pay your premium.
  • Finding a plan that fits your needs and your budget.
  • Applying for your health plan.

By following these steps below you will be on your way to securing your health coverage for 2014 avoiding the tax penalty for being without it.

Step 1:  Choose a carrier link and click.

Step 2:  You will be asked to enter your basic information.  This will include your name, address, date of birth, smoker status, etc.

Step 3:  You will be asked if you want to lower your health insurance premiums.  You will want to answer “yes”.

Step 4:  Next you will click the “get your official tax credit” option.

Step 5:  Now you will need to create a user name and password.  This you will need to remember this to log on in the future so keep it in a safe place.  Do not share your user name and password with anyone.

Step 6:  In this step you will be asked to provide financial information including your income, residency and method of payment.  It is recommended to have your income taxes, W2 or payroll stub available for this step.

Step 7:  Using the subsidy (tax credit) calculator you can find out if you are eligible to receive help in paying your health insurance premiums.

**If you do qualify for a subsidy (tax credit), you will then be directed to the plan options available through the public marketplace (on the exchange).

**If you do not qualify for a subsidy (tax credit), you will then be directed to the plan options available through the private marketplace (off the exchange with the carrier).

The following steps are true for the public and private marketplace.

Step 8:  Choosing a plan.  You will have the option of choosing the metallic level of coverage that best fits what you need.  You will be able to choose from platinum, gold, silver, and bronze.  Each level represents a different percentage of coverage with platinum being the highest and bronze being the lowest.  You will also have your choice of HMO, PPO and High Deductible HSA plans and hospital/physician networks.

Step 9:  Once you have made your plan selection then click to enroll.
